Who Told You

There are some legendary musical acts that have, whether intentionally or unintentionally, become such targets of ridicule that their names now serve as a kind of shorthand for lampooning anyone else who strays too close to repeating their shortcomings. Few bands want their name mentioned in the same breath as Spinal Tap, for instance. Popstrels blanche at comparisons with Rebecca Black. Rappers quail at the faintest murmur of Vanilla Ice. And duos across the world live in fear of The Cheeky Girls, Jedward, and Milli Vanilli.

And why do I bring this up? Well, for at least the last five years I’ve been getting more and more bored out of my skull at the way so many rappers still insist on using that nailed-to-the-wall-with-Auto-Tune vocal sound. (Enough already!) Drake, of course, is a repeat offender in this respect, but his contribution to this particular record reaches such an expressive nadir that I was suddenly struck like a thunderbolt by it’s remarkable similarities with The Shaggs’ iconically inept ‘My Pal Foot Foot’. And, honestly, were I in the mood for a dose of musically unrelated vocal droning, I’d rather listen to the Shaggs. At least they had a decent excuse…
